Groceries Have Arrived in East Village
Get out your totes and produce bags, East Villagers! A long-anticipated community milestone is here at last—Real Canadian Superstore® opens inside RioCan’s 5th & THIRD shopping centre on May 15.
While the current global circumstances surrounding Superstore’s opening are much different than we’d imagined, we’ve been looking forward to this moment since 2010, when the East Village retail strategy was first conceived. The master plan for the neighbourhood envisioned a complete community with boutiques, eateries and local coffee shops, as well as convenient access to the bare necessities. Now, with the advent of Superstore, East Village living is easier than ever, with all your basic needs only a short walk or bike ride away.
As excited as East Village residents are for shopping at their fingertips, we know this opening is just as big for our neighbours in connected communities on the east end of downtown—like Inglewood and Bridgeland—as well as area visitors, workers and students. Thanks to amenities like an underground parkade and outdoor benches, the shopping centre will become a destination for home cooks, hungry snackers and lunch-breakers alike.
To help their customers and staff observe physical distancing, the store will have implemented measures to help reduce contact and control traffic. Customers will also be able to order groceries online through PC Express™, and a dedicated shopping hour for those who are most vulnerable will be in place from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.
Located at 428 6th Ave SE, 5th & THIRD sits at the gateway to downtown Calgary and occupies a full city block. Still to come to this two-storey retail centre are other everyday essentials and a few splurges, too. Fresh Slice Pizza, TD and Scotiabank are all set to open in the 178,000 square foot space this summer, with Olympia Liquor, Winners and other stores to follow.
If a zero-minute commute from home to groceries sounds like a dream to you, keep an eye on the residential towers rising above 5th & THIRD’s retail podium. Residents of BOSA Development’s Arris will benefit from well-appointed rental units and the convenience of having shops and services only steps from their front doors. Just think—you’ll never have to worry about melted ice cream ever again! The first Arris tower, with 190 rental units over its 26 storeys, will be a place to call home in spring 2021. The second, larger tower (43 storeys) will begin construction at a later date.
