— EAST VILLAGE (DE)TOURS
FOR PASSIONATE ART ADMIRERS

Abstract, or realistic. 2D or 3D. Painted, printed, cast carved or built. Art in East Village does more than introduce colour and interest into the community; it is a thought-provoking reflection of our evolving culture and collective memory, an archive of our creativity.

1 // BLOOM, MICHEL DE BROIN

(Permanent – Montreal, Canada)
Art in the park is redefined with this 23-metre tall streetlight sculpture inspired by St. Patrick’s Island’s blooms. Reflecting both nature and the cityscape, it is a beacon and a meeting point.

2 // TOUCH TRACES, CASSIE SUCHE

(Temporary – Calgary, Canada)
Composed of hundreds of East Villagers’ fingerprints, this artwork, which reflects individuality within a community, and tactile connections to others, can be found on bridge underpasses and other surfaces along RiverWalk™.

3 // THESAMEWAYBETTER/READER, RON MOPPETT

(Permanent – Calgary, Canada)
A stunning 34-metre long mural along Riverfront Lane made up of 950,000 mosaic tiles tells a visual story that unfolds in 5 accordion-angled sections, using a mix of images that narrate change in Calgary.

4 // PROMENADE, JULIAN OPIE

(Permanent – London, UK)
On the corner of 4th Street and 5th Avenue SE, this 4-sided, 24-foot high tower has 20 LED panels that display vibrant pop art animations that pay tribute to the energy of the neighbourhood.

5 // DEVICE TO ROOT OUT EVIL, DENNIS OPPENHEIM

(Temporary – New York, USA)
An upside-down church with the steeple buried in the ground, this thought-provoking look at religion in modern times was first unveiled in Venice. It has since been shown around the world, and can now be seen at 5th Street Square.

6 // TRIO & FISH, CHRISTIAN MOELLER

(Permanent – Frankfurt, Germany)
These outdoor and indoor pieces can be seen at Calgary’s Central Library. TRIO has 2 pieces swaying on the west side while the 3rd stands alone on the east; FISH uses over 10,000 linen-bound books to create a fish’s face when viewed from afar.

7 // CORRIDOR OF CONNECTION, MICHELLE HOOGVELD

(Temporary – Calgary, Canada)
A 950-foot mural along the 4th Street SE Underpass that connects East Village to The Culture + Entertainment District in east Victoria Park, it is made of dozens of triangular panels and prominently features imagery of lips; an ode to traditional storytelling and modern communication.
