Step Into The Open
Welcome to The Open – East Village’s newest, boldest blend of fun and functionality. With vibrant colours, striking design (and yes, it’s already an award-winner) and a whole lot of energy, it’s not just a public washroom; it’s your new favourite pickleball spot.
Pushing the boundaries of what public spaces can be, The Open is designed to welcome Calgarians of all ages and abilities. Its name nods to pickleball’s iconic tournament format while symbolizing its true purpose: accessibility and inclusivity for everyone.
The Open wouldn’t be what it is without a rockstar team keeping it safe, clean and ready for action. Let’s introduce you to the folks making it happen.
Meet The WASHROOM ATTENDANTS OF THE OPEN
Did you know? Having washroom attendants on-site is a best practice that significantly improves cleanliness, enhances safety, and creates a more welcoming environment for everyone. That’s why The Open will have a dedicated team of two attendants during operational hours who will welcome visitors and ensure the space is clean and inviting.
RadiCare Ventures is a local organization specializing in urban cleaning and safety services that will be running a one-year pilot program at The Open. With extensive experience and a compassionate, community-first approach, RadiCare’s team has worked closely with vulnerable populations in Calgary’s inner city. Each member of the team brings unique experiences and valuable insights that contribute to their work.
Greg, 54
Greg is a proud Calgarian who joined RadiCare after battling physical disabilities, chronic pain, and depression. His upbringing on a ranch instilled a strong work ethic and a deep understanding of responsibility—qualities he brings to his work.
“This role has given me a chance to heal and feel connected again.”
He credits his grandmother’s wisdom for guiding him in life, “She taught me to always try my best, be honest, and be kind to others.” For Greg, being part of the team is about treating others with respect, offering help when needed and contributing meaningfully to the community.
Caitlin, 34
For Caitlin, working with RadiCare marks a new chapter in her life—one that she cherishes deeply. Originally from Edmonton, Caitlin overcame years of homelessness and addiction through a treatment program and supportive housing. Finding employment after seven years away from the workforce was daunting, but RadiCare gave her a chance to rebuild.
“I understand how hard it is for vulnerable populations, because I was there. I take immense pride in helping clean up and be part of the solution. It feels good to be a positive part of the community.”
Caitlin stressed the importance of being purposeful in interactions with others, something she takes seriously in her role as a washroom attendant, “It’s important to remember that everyone comes from different backgrounds, with unique assumptions and experiences that shape their perspective. Clear communication is essential, but it’s also possible to leverage those differing viewpoints to foster cooperation and understanding.”
Chad, 59
Chad is a Métis Calgarian whose journey to RadiCare is rooted in resilience and adaptability. His career path has been diverse—from studying law and working as a Power Systems Electrician to pursuing his passion for history and philosophy. However, after breaking his back nearly 18 years ago, Chad’s life took an unexpected turn. Now, after 25 years living outside Calgary, Chad is excited to return to the city.
“The city has changed so much, and East Village feels like a symbol of that change—blending new ideas with historical roots,” Chad shares. “This role at The Open aligns with that transformation. It’s about promoting safety with dignity and building community, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”
For Chad, this opportunity reflects the very essence of Calgary—resilience, growth, and a commitment to doing things differently.
