Pssst.... The Bees are Back!

You read that right. The sun is shining, rivers are flowing, flowers are blooming, and the bees are returning once again to East Village for the summer!

A collection of five beehives and thousands of honey bees will once again be abuzz as thousands of our tiniest inner-city residents move into their urban home. This will be the third year the bees have been in EV at their colourful honeycomb apiary, just west of the Simmons Building along RiverWalk. The Hive in East Village is a sustainability and biodiversity project in partnership with local beekeeper and honey producer Amber Yano of MOB Honey!

As most people know, honey bees play a crucial role in the health of our planet and actually flourish in urban environments. Beehives located in cities produce healthier and more productive bees because urban bees have access to greater biodiversity, resulting in a more varied diet and stronger immune system. East Village’s proximity to the extensive biodiversity of RiverWalk and the 31-acres of St. Patrick’s Island makes it a perfect location for bees to thrive.

If you’re curious to expand your knowledge of these incredible pollinators, join us at The Hive all summer long for MOB workshops. You’ll get all suited up to go inside the enclosure with local biodiversity expert Amber Yano and witness firsthand the bees hard at work. Like all community programming in East Village, the workshops are free and open to anyone interested. Workshops will cover pollinator stewardship, beekeeping management, honeybee physiology and morphology, and everything you need to know about the amazing life of honeybees!

In order to keep everyone safe and respect all AHS gathering restrictions, workshop participants MUST pre-register in advance. Bee jackets with veils will be provided to all participants, upon registration a checklist of personal items to bring will be sent.

Workshops will run at 11:00am and 2:00pm:

The Hive serves as a safe place for honeybees, a pollinator educator, and hub for community collaboration. So for the sake of QueenBey, Queen B, and all the Queen Bees, please help us make them feel right at home in East Village.
